Wixom, MI is set in the wooded areas of Oakland County, with a growing population of approximately 14,000. First settled in the 1830s, Wixom's steady growth began with the construction of a railroad line brought increased commerce to the town. The town experienced a modest amount of prosperity, until a disastrous fire burned the downtown area completely in 1929. Recent plans to redevelop the downtown area are in full swing.
The 1950s saw the construction of the Wixom Assembly Plant, where Ford Motor Co. built some of its most famous vehicles, including the Thunderbird. Due to the economic status of Ford at the time, the plant was shut down in mid-2007; fortunately Wixom has not suffered greatly because of this. The town continues to rely on its strong manufacturing core, which produces products ranging from firearm telescopes to sporting goods.
A redevelopment project is underway to modernize the business infrastructure in Wixom, and has lead to the construction of commercial offices, plaza parks, restaurants, and small local shops. While some parts of Michigan have struggled economically, Wixom continues to thrive. While many people still find employment in the manufacture of transportation equipment, scientific and technical services are growth industries in Wixom.
Wixom real estate is experiencing a boom, and a $200 million residential development project has infused a new desire for property. This is one of the reasons that the population of Wixom has grown by nearly 5,000 people since the 1990s. Ranch condos, large townhomes, and single family residences are replacing the destroyed downtown Wixom.
Aside from the friendly business atmosphere and residential building projects, another reason Wixom real estate is seeing a growth in demand is due to its strong educational backbone - the middle and high school both have award-winning musical productions, and a focus on academic excellence.
